May, Poet Laureate

May is a lovely enthusiastic Scottish lady who became 1Radio’s first and only Poet Laureate. Rumour has it that Ceejay gave her that moniker and it simply stuck.

May, also known as Maybe, was a loyal and devoted 1Radio listener with a love of poetry and prose. She was an extra in the Simon Pegg movie "Burke and Hare" when they shot scenes in Scotland.

May first appeared on the 1Radio radar when she submitted an article for 1mag, our magazine for listeners and presenters. From then on, at every milestone in the 1Radio cycle of life, May would squeeze out a few stanzas of rhyme to mark the event. May would often name check as many shows and presenters that she could in a single piece of work. She would seemingly spend endless hours on these supremely long pieces and we would try to give them as much exposure on the site and on air as we possibly could.

May’s real claim to fame amongst 1Radio devotees, though, was not her poetry but her shoutbox dialogue and extensive use of emoticons. May has an unnerving ability to write as she speaks - with an other-worldly dialect. Some say it has Celtic elements. Others liken it to Alan Turing’s tentative steps in machine-based artificial intelligence crossed with shades of Stanley Unwin. Certainly, it takes some getting used to and everyone would rib her about it. May’s shotgun approach to emoticons is akin to someone discovering Sticky Keys for the first time and my shoutbox coding was never enough to curtail her icon abuse. May, bless her, took it all in good humour.
